Michael Porter - The Greatness of Jesus, your High Priest

"The Greatness of Jesus, your High Priest"

A Sermon on Hebrews 4:14-16

Pastor Michael Porter

Hebrews 4:14-16

14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

The Book of Hebrews in a nutshell:
Jesus is BETTER.

How is Jesus is BETTER according to Hebrews?

1. Heb. 1:1-4 states that Jesus is better because He is God’s ultimate Word of revelation.

2. Heb. 1:5-2:18 states that Jesus is better than the Angels.

3. Heb. 3:1-4:13 states that Jesus is better than Moses.

4. Heb. 4:14-10:39 states that Jesus is a better High Priest.

Why do the original readers (and ourselves!) need to hear so exhaustively that Jesus is better?

Why? Because knowledge of the supremacy of Jesus is the one thing that is going to help these wavering believers persevere in the faith.

The Big Idea of Hebrews 4:14-16:

"Persevere in the faith knowing the greatness of Jesus your High Priest."

Sermon Outline:

"Persevere in the faith knowing the greatness of Jesus your High Priest" because:

2. Jesus our Great High Priest is Lowly

Point #1 - Jesus our Great High Priest is Exalted (v. 14)

14 Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

Point #2 - Jesus our Great High Priest is Lowly (vv. 15-16)

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
